In this assignment, we were tasked with picking on of artist Joseph Cornell’s “Boxes” and writing a play or screenplay on it. I chose Andromeda: Grand Hotel de l’Observatoire. I focused particularly on the connections to the Greek myth of Andromeda, her mother Cassandra, and hero Perseus, as well as the idea of a hotel among the stars.
Below are two short scenes where Droma, our hotel worker protagonist, is starting to recognize the problems in her relationship with Kaz, her partner and rebellion leader.

The Worst Play Ever — Stage & Screenwriting II

This was a fun assignment where we intentionally wrote the worst play we could think of, and then revised and revised until we had a final product that we could be proud of. I started with a meta, self-referential piece that mocked itself for how pretentiously ambitious it was. After lots of rewriting, I nailed down the core theme: existential fears about death and finding our purpose in life.
Below is part of a conversation between Olivia, our protagonist, and The Author who wrote the play the two are in. Olivia is desperately searching for the reason why her whole life was created simply to be a character in the play.

1-Act Play — Playwriting I

This was my first time writing a long piece (over 25 pages). At first, the task of writing a 1-Act Play seemed daunting, as I was unsure how to properly foreshadow or plan everything out ahead of time. Our process for this was to write about a third of the play every two weeks so we could receive frequent feedback on it. This helped me learn what felt out of place as I worked, and I was able to extensively re-edit earlier sections to make the story progression flow smoother.
Below is a short scene from the middle of the piece, where main character Guy feels the walls closing in on him as the regime authorities start to catch on to he & his boss/ex-partner's plans to escape the city. Beginning to realize that he might just have to go through with the plans whether he wants to or not, he returns home one last time…
